I’m Rae, the solo developer of this game. In this tutorial I’ll help you get started, but first a little introduction.
If you mainly play horse games, it’s good to know this is not the usual “breed the best horses, win the most competitions” kind of game. If you also play other pet games though, some mechanics will probably feel more familiar. Rather than breeding & competing, you can think more of it as a “pet collection” kind of genre. Design horses, decorate them, give them companions – create your ideal characters! Ravalon aims to be a stress free game, where you can decide your own playing complexity. If you want, you can keep it simple and stick to only exploring for items and gathering pretty ponies. However, there’s more features you can use to play. Pick character types like Rogue or Witch for your horses and level them up in their skill, complete quests, craft items, venture skill-based areas, …
Ravalon is far from a “finished” game, as I’m continuously working on it and more features are planned for the future. I try to keep the tutorial & wiki updated with any changes, but if you’ve just joined, it’s always worth checking out the latest news posts to see what’s happening.

Leveling
You can gain experience points (XP) through…
– completing encounters (+5)
– completing quests (+20)
– befriending deities (+50)
– creating a horse (+40)
The progress bar tells you your current level, how much XP you have and how much you need to progress to the next level.
Skills
You can gain crafting, healing and alchemy skill points by using items and completing encounters & quests. You will need these to craft items.
Stats
There are a total of 14 stats that you can collect points for – more about that later. Clicking the “Stats overview” link will take you to a page with your inventory of them.
Mooncycle
The little moon icon tells you what the current moonphase in Ravalon is. It switches to the next phase every 4 days, with a full moon each 29th day. During those 24 hours, a mystical territory called the Moonridge opens for exploring. At 0:00, access to the territory is closed again and the mooncycle repeats itself.
Let’s start with your first horse. To create a horse, you need to use an item called Soulkeeper – you start with 2 free ones. After that, you can buy more from the merchants. Simply go to your inventory, click the “Use” button on the Soulkeeper, and you’ll be taken to the horse creator. Here, you can fully customize your horse: pick a build, coat, mane & tail style and color, markings… Once you’re happy, give them a name, click the “Create” button and there you go – your first horse is ready!
Now, let’s get you started with playing. One of the main features of Ravalon is “exploring”. There are 4 main territories (the Valley, Deep Forest, Mountains, and Dark Woods) that you can explore “encounters” in. Encounters are short stories that give you 1 to 3 reactions to choose from, and each option has 1 or 2 possible outcomes. As a result of your choices, you can gain items, skills or stats. Each encounter takes 4% energy.
How do I get energy?
Each day, when the server rolls over at 0:00 UTC, you start with 100% energy. You can gain more by using items or getting rewards, and you can take a rest by the Aeonian Oak twice a day for 100% energy refills. A short rest takes 30 minutes to refill your energy, a long rest 60 minutes. You can do both only once a day and one at a time, and your energy needs to be at 25% or lower to take a rest.
– Once you have 4 horses, the long rest will disappear for you and you’ll start your day straight away with 200%. You can still get a short rest for another 100%.
– Once you have 8 horses, both rest buttons disappear for you and you start each day with 300%.
What can I get from encounters?
◼️ Items: There are many items to be found: fruit, vegetables, herbs, objects, … They all have use values, like energy or stat points, which you can redeem in your inventory.
◼️ Skill & stat points: You can also gain skill or stats points directly, like getting a Bravery point when picking the risky option for example.
◼️ Trust points: There are 4 categories of trust points: Bird (BT), Reptile (RT), Small Animal (SAT) and Large Animal (LAT). You can gain these by picking options that help other animals. In the marketplace, you can buy companions for your horses with the relevant trust points.
How do I unlock the territories?
Deities are your guide in Ravalon: you always need to befriend a specific deity to gain access to a territory or NPC. The first territory, the Valley, is linked to Rhain. You only need a sunflower to befriend her, which you’ll conveniently already find in your inventory.
So who are the deities? This is a little lore part of Ravalon – you can read each deity’s backstory on their page. In order to befriend them, you need to gift them the items listed on their page. In turn, they unlock a territory and/or quest NPC:
Territories
The valley – Rhain
The deep forest – Agga
The mountains – Aewyn
The dark woods – Ivarr
NPC’s
Sassafras – Rhain
Rufus – Veronia
Rowan – Ravri
Kai – Ivarr
Arwin – Rheronis
Each deity also has its own familiar, who is always very protective, so you’ll need to gain their trust as well. You can do this by gifting them items they like, each time gaining 25%. Once a familiar fully trusts you, they’ll give you an one-time gift of 3 rubies.
Now that we’ve covered the basics of playing, let’s go back to your horses. On an individual horse’s page, you’ll see an “Edit” button. Click on it to start further customizing your horse.
First, you can select a background for your horse. You start with 5 free copies of the “Valley view” background – you can buy more backgrounds in the marketplace.
There are also many decorations you can add to your horse, like flowers, jewelry, pelts, or scenery like rocks, rain, … As discussed earlier, you can also get your horse animal companions. There is no limit on how many you can equip. As you can see, you can also specify on which layer the decoration or companion should be, so you can move things behind the horse or under their mane/tail.
Backgrounds and decorations don’t get “used up” like other items. If you apply it to a horse, it gets taken from your inventory, but if you change the horse’s background or remove a decoration, it’ll be added back to your inventory again.
However, there’s a third category of item you can equip on your horse: mutations. These are body alterations such as horns, wings, … You can only buy these at the black market, and mutations are single use items! So while you can equip & remove a decoration/companion as many times as you like – once you’ve applied a mutation to a horse, removing it doesn’t return it to your inventory.
Next, you’ll see fields to edit your horse’s name and bio, which you can do as many times as you like. The bio is perfect for writing your horse’s backstory and any info you want to share about them.
If you’ve changed your mind about your horse’s build, you can buy a Shapeshifter in the marketplace and use it here to change your horse’s build to another one. Everything, from the horse’s design to all equipped items, will simply switch over to your chosen build.
As long as you buy a new Shapeshifter each time, you can keep changing the build of your horse as many times as you want.
Lastly, you’ll see an option to set your horse’s type. There are 8 to choose from, and each has their own type-specific stat:
◼️ Leader (Intuition)
◼️ Adventurer (Agility)
◼️ Rogue (Stealth)
◼️ Herbalist (Herbalism)
◼️ Warrior (Combat)
◼️ Witch (Witchcraft)
◼️ Sorcerer (Black magic)
◼️ Astrologist (Astrology)
Once you’ve selected one, you’ll see a progress bar to level up your horse in their stat. Simply input the amount you want to add to the chosen horse in the field (it shows how much you have in inventory of the stat in the heading, like 18 in this example) and click the green + button.
There is no cap on the level your horse can reach, and you can aim for your horse to be the most skilled in the leaderboards you’ll find in the top menu bar.
Currently, having a certain level type horse is a requirement to unlock areas in “Venturing”. You can learn more about what venturing is in the wiki.
One of the main development goals for Ravalon is to expand this feature and give each type more depth and function, so stay tuned for more!
There are 2 types of quests: mini and story quests.
Mini quests are a single quest, such as for example cave mining or a treasure hunt, that can be repeated endlessly.
Under the story quests, you’ll find the NPC’s of Ravalon. After you’ve befriended the deity that’s linked to them, they’ll unlock and you can progress through their quests in the form of a story. You can only complete them once. If the NPC’s image is faded and unclickable, it means you have currently completed all quests they have to offer.
Crafting always takes 1 to 4 items and 1 kind of skill (crafting, healing or alchemy). Each craftable item also requires a certain proficiency level in crafting: Apprentice, Artisan, Expert, Master or Grandmaster.
All craftable items are listed per proficiency level and unlock as you progress. Your level is displayed at the top of the crafting page. For each item you craft, you gain 1 point towards your proficiency.
Some items are craftable-only, meaning you can’t find them when exploring or buy them from merchants.
Some things you might still be wondering and that haven’t been covered yet…
◼️ Do my horses age?
No worries, your horses are immortal, so you can enjoy them without stress!
◼️ How do I get currency?
Crystals: You can sell a selection of items to dealer Harvey in the marketplace.
Rubies: You can buy this premium currency in the Cave.
After gaining the trust of all 9 deities’ familiars, which will reward you with a total of 27 rubies, there are also a select few items you can sell to Harvey for rubies.
◼️ What are bundles?
Bundles are a special item category: a bundle consists of a selection of multiple items. For example, the “Berries” bundle consists of strawberries, blueberries, cranberries, … In order to use a bundle, you need to go to Bessie’s trade in the marketplace and there you’ll receive 1 random item of the selection in exchange for your bundle.
◼️ What are oddities?
Oddities are another special item category; these items don’t have a standard use value, like fruit or herbs, but rather serve a specific function. Examples are the Soulkeeper or Shapeshifter items.
◼️ Where do I find X item?
Searching for a specific item that you need, for example to befriend a deity or complete a quest? The wiki has an item catalogue which lists how many encounters per territory have it as a possible reward.
You can find more in-depth information in our wiki. Have any questions? Don’t hesitate to ask them in the forum! 😊
